LIBRI & FILATI (BOOKS & YARNS)

---------------

Didn't resist to curiosity, and yesterday I bought the new book by Kate Jacobs "Friday night knitting club", that has just been issued in libraries in Italy. I only read the preface but it seems cute, even though I prefere the original cover to the one chosen for the italian edition, with thigh in the wind and high heels... maybe I'm too critical today. Anyway I'm going to start it as soon as I finish the book on my nightstand, and perhaps we'll talk about it then...

Apart from that, I wanted to show how the wrap I'm knitting with my Cumin is proceeding: I love the effect given by teh pattern (that is nearly the same used in Spirogyra mittens, but I knitted in multiples of 8 stitches instead of 6); I'm only a bit perplexed on how the wool renders, because it's actually soft and elastic, but once knitted it seems coarse, rough... but I think I can't explain it well...

I finished spinning 2 more creatures!

GREEN TEA: spun like Cumin, a single ply, quite thin; it's a very brilliant green

AUTUMN: spun froma a melange roving, it gives many shades on red, that remind my of autumn warm colours; I spun it thick and thin and plied with a thread... to be the second time I do this it hasn't been so easy to mantain the correct tension on the thread and on the wool as well.
I guess I'll soon try to play with the tension and see what happens in the yarn...

SPIROGYRA e CUMINO

Invece eccoli qua:

Mi è davvero piaciuto vedere come i colori sfumano da uno all'altro.

A parte tutto sta venendo bene secondo me.

---------
After almost two months I finally finished my Spirogyra, designed by Lynn Vogel... don't know why they frogged for so long: the pattern was enjoyable and they worked out quite fine, modestly.... I started to knit them in Switzerland, and then set them apart before my spinning wheel and spinning itself, poor them!
Here they are instead.

By the way, I knitted them with a yarn I bought on Etsy from Pancakeandlulu; it's hand dyed, I wanted to see one, to understand how the colour is "built", how it renders once knitted, etc: my comment is amazing! I really loved to see the shades fading one into another...
Parenthesis on the stitches: adoring, they give a lacy effect without being too difficult, and add movement to the work, especially here that it's knitted in round.

In fact, I'm using the same pattern for a wrap I've just started knitting with my last spun creature: CUMIN, that up to now is going fine, for being a single ply
which is still a bit risky for me (that don'y have much experience in spinning), because in parts with little torsion the wool thread (I didn't add any acrilyc) tends to break. Actually it happened only casting on the stitches on the needle, where I had to pull the thread a bit more, not in the proper work... many justifications...!
Anyway, it's getting lovely.
Ah I was forgetting to show the yarn, sorry!

LAVORO A MODULI (MODULAR KNITTING)

----------

Quiet summer evening, finally some warm breeze is blowing after a sunny day; here summer doesn't seem to have take off thoroughly yet
but today it seems to.
The first thought then si: " CAN ANYONE KEEP HANDLING WOOL DURING SUMMER?"
(Here in Italy at least...)
I personally can, maybe I won't knit a sweater, but smalle stuff, but I'm chilly enough to stand hot weather; to tell the truth, usually in summer I lack a bit of inspiration, but it's funny to realize that by the end of august, when the first storms arrive, my wool desire sets off. We'll see if this year nature will repeat itself...

So I was wandering on the internet and I jumped into a technique that really intrigued me: MODULAR KNITTING. As far as I understood you must work in blocks, that are not cast off and sewed, but are all connected to form scarves, blankets and so on. Blocks are square, triangle or diamond shaped.

I found this image on a blog on this theme: In a Happy Camper, where there are many patterns and images, but I feel this one really gives the idea. I also found a book that seems interesting: Modular Knits: New Techniques for Today's Knitters , but before buying it I prefere to try and see how it all works out.
Has anyone tried this?

AVENA...IL COLORE, NON LA FIBRA! (OATS... THE COLOUR, NOT THE FIBRE!)

-------------

When my Summer Tweed arrived home I really couldn't decide what to knit with it, I've never liked much summer knitwear: sometimes it's too heavy, or too lacy and lightmmh but I wanted to let this gorgeous yarn render its best.
So I searched many many patterns on the web and found one on Drops Designs, that I adapted a bit, actually changing the bands and the yoke, well I kept only the frame but it worked out nice!
I't's knitted all in round, even the sleeves, withthe great result that you don't have nearly any seams in the end, and you can try it on while it's growing.
So I was a bit hesitant with the neck shape, because it's quite large especially in the back, but it suites fine and I'll keep as it is.
I still have three skeins left, from the 10 I bought, I'll keep them for now and see wht comes out ...actually I'm already thinking of a Mobius wrap in lace, quite cute...

LE MIE PRIME CREATURE LANOSE (MY FIRST WOOLLEN CREATURES)

------------

A day spent in the countryside, at an anniversary party of a couple of friends, it's nice to create a tradition from a single meeting, to pass some time together..
So I'm relaxed and excited enough to start next week, so I'll end up this day with a moment for my woollen world.
I'd like to point out that recently I haven't written about my knitting, I was driven from spinning, but I surely haven't stopped at all! In fact I'm workin on a pull for myself with the extraordinay Rowan Summer Tweed, and Spirogyra mittens are still pending, so I hope to publish the results soon.

Anyway, with great emotion I post my first woollen creatures, spun with my own hands from the rovings I bought in Switzerland; they realy make me happy, as they let me realize that I'm able to make something I only hoped to... it seems I've opened a series of doors to a new world, and I still don't know where it will take me.... but I feel I'll have the skill and the passion to create anything that will come with time. It's the first time in my life I have this sensation!

Not to change topic:

STRAWBERRY FOREST

Spun in 2 ply, from a melange of soft pure wool of a medium weight. Doesn't it remind of strawberries growing in a forest?

(to find the names to me it's the funniest part of the game!)

PALE RAINBOW

Spun in two ply, from a melange prepared by the shop with many kinds of wool and colours. The best part was to see the colours flowing from my hands and become a rainbow thread, from which the name.

Now the good thing is that I still haven't finished the work: I've to find out what to knit with them, and then do it!!!!
INFO DI SERVIZIO:

PER IL MOMENTO NON STO METTENDO IN VENDITA SU ETSY I FILATI TINTI CON PIGMENTI NATURALI, LI RISERVO PER I PROBABILI MERCATINI D'AUTUNNO, MA SE A QUALCUNO INTERESSANO SCRIVETEMI!!
