FILARE, LEGGERE, IMPARARE SEMPRE... (SPINNING, READING, ALWAYS LEARNING...)

-----------
Icy wind and snow outside, and a strong cold, quietness once these holidays have passed through and to be forced to rest: what better conditions to stay warm at my pc, trying to write down a few ideas and putting a bit of order among my creative intentions.

In these holidays I've been so lazy, didn't actually work at all, I only started and unraveled three times a suite for my puppy...

Despite of this, December was actually quite successful: I sold 2 scarves put on Etsy and a set made of mittens+scarf custom ordered from a friend for his girlfriend.
I'm so delighted!
Especially because I started this production without particular plans or expectations, so we'll wait and see what comes next; in the meantime, I'm thinking of a couple of ideas for the "local market", as the internet one still seems to me a bit cold and so huge to move within, and I believe that some garments should be touched and felts directly to be appreciated... some features cannot really be correctly caught through a PC.

Well, talking about facts (or better handiworks) in these days I'm fully dedicated to "studying" and learnig new spinning techniques I found in the two amazing books received for Christmas:
- INTERTWINED
- CREATIVE SPINNING

They're very clear in explanations and full of pictures and ideas to leave without breath; as some people asked me how I started to spin and which were my references, I'd better say i'd suggest these books to people that already have a little confiance with spinning (either with spindle or with a wheel), as the instructions just give basics for granted.
Between the two, Intertwined in particular shows how to experiment artistic yarns using the strangest fibers (audio tapes or fabrics) and patterns. Creative Spinning, instead, focuses above all on how to exalt the properties of different available fibers, applying specific spinning techniques and combining them.

It seems to me to face a big banquet in which I can taste any delicatessen imaginable!!

------------

Christmas Eve, can't belive it's already come, and that so much time 's already passed snce my last post here. As for every year, time has literally flown, perhaps even more this time.
Taken by parcels, orders, woollen gifts and other creations for my baby, I really identified with a plodding Santa's elf, and OOOPS here we are!
Although I have quite many news to tell and show, my pot belly makes me really veeery distrated, I can't concentrate on oone thing without starting to fantasize or daydream he he he.

First of all, anyhow, I thought that the Blog is about to be one year old... so with Christmas wishes I'd like to thank all the people that passed here, by mistake or for curiosity, all the people that returned to read more, and with their comments helped me to go on with this project. When I began this adventure I actually didn't expect to arrive at this point.

As it often happens, life makes surprises without us to notice them, in case we're living with enough intensity... this year it was like this to me: if I look back, I can only smile to all the emotions and thoughts that this space brought to me, and smile even more to all the things to come next year. How much I'd like to peek into one of coming months, as I do with gifts under the Christmas Tree - I touch and sake them, definitely can't resist!

FILARE, CARDARE, MISCHIARE COLORI: IL MIO PRIMO TWEED (MY FIRST TWEED: SPINNING, CARDING AND MIXING COLORS

-------------

Very busy these days: finally two parcels I had ordered a couple of weeks ago arrived from the UK. I was longing to have them, as there were some new fleeces to spin ( not only woollen, but also some silk blends that are amazingly bright!!) and above all a pair of handcarders.
In fact, I had some batts of solid, vivid colors: yellow, red, ochre and azure, that I didn't want to spin separate because they would have turned too strong; so I made a little investment and bought the handcarders, to be able to mix up all the colors I want (non only these, already looking forward for the ones to come!!), and especially ti prepare thoroughly the fibres before spinning.
I learnt that you get better handspun yarns if the fibres are well open, soft, combed in the same direction and of course without piles or knots.
Apart from this digression, I started straight away to pun a bit of each color together and to comb the fibres until I saw that they got fluffy, airy and uniform both in the color and the consistence... looknig close at these fleece I worked out that spinning them the single colors would have been so mixed to seem just on melange shade from far, but still all definite closely... the only type of yarn that resembles this features seems to be a Tweed (GOSH! It's my favourite yarn/fabric!!!!).
To render these ideas I shot all the steps from single batts to the final two ply yarn:

1- SINGLE BATTS
Before carding, single fiber batts are still very dense and the amounts of each color are assembled roughly: actually there's very little of azure, as I wished it to give only a slight shade, but the basic tone had to be warm, hot.

2 - CARDED BATTS
Here's what I tried to describe above: the fibres are airy, soft, and the final color is the multiplication of its components, yellow gives the brightness, ochre the harshness, red the warmth, and azure a little shadow.

3 - THE SINGLE PLY THREAD
As soon as I finished carding, I started spinning and this is the first thread, that I left quite light, though always a bit irregular in thickness, as I prefer yarns to be, it seems more natural to let fibres flow through my fingers without drawing them too much, leaving the thickness as offhand as possible.

4 - THE FINAL YARN
This is the result! I plied the signle threads to give more consitence and movement to the yarn; in this way, the unevennesses of both threads alternate interweaving along the yarn and give a wavy efect that I love.
The last step, as for all my works, is the choice of the name, amusing! In this case, the shades seemed unequivocal, couldn't evoke anything but a spice, yes but which one? I thought of those indian blends, the MASALAS - there are infinite kninds, actually I was told that every family has its recipe, ideal for a specific meal (white meat, red meat, fish, vegetables...)- like for the curries.
So here's my MASALA TWEED!

UNA CASA CHE SI POPOLA... (a HOME GETTING ANIMATED...)

Il nome originale del modello, in realtà, è ELIJAH, disegnato da Ysolda Teague;

----------------

Just to stay on the theme, one news in these months is the space progressively reducing at home (my tiny, veeeery tiny home!), and the most cumbersome stuff is still to come!
This post in particular is dedicated to all those little things I really can't resist
and that I keep knitting or buying: toys, baby berets and jackets etc. The last ones are IPPO and FAFANTE, let me introduce both.

Ippo si the toy, of course: a perfect model to measure my knitwear in baby size (apart from arms and legs that are veeeery long); so I named the beret thereafter, I knitted it all in garter stitch, and adapted the decreasings in order to make it end pointed - I don't fancy normal hat, can't help it!
The size is calculated roughly, so I hope it'll suite fine!

The hot stuff yet is FAFANTE:
the original pattern name actually is a ELIJAH, designed by Ysolda Teague; It was love at first sight, I knitted it with a cotton thread, to avoid little piles and to wash easily possible stains, then I filled it with cushion stuffing.
Such a great fun to make!
As usual the part I prefered was choosing the color: brilliant orange. I had never knitted any toy, this is totally seamless: each piece is attached to next one simply picking the stitches, and have to be stuffed as long as the work proceeds, so you can see it take shape and grow, really nice.
I also suggest the pattern: it's clear and quite easy to follow, in english of course... I found another one that definitely intrigues me: a little owl designed by KnitWhits, so sweet! hope my baby will like it...

----------

Actually, to call it a proper collection of accessories sounds randing, but I wouldn't say how to call it differently.
Prehaps, who entered deeply in the blog may have seen the first work I kniitted with this yarn: the title was " a jacket to be wrapped in", one of my favourites.
Since then, I had a lot of spare yarn, kept in the trunk for some time; didn't know what to knit with that, nothing was satisfying, but when I started thinking of the online shop I remembered about that, especially because it was pretty new, and composed of quite precious threads that I assembled after hours of reflections...
Two threads of kid mohair, in the deepest lilac, plus one thread of the softest wool chenille in burnt brown; twisted together they suggest a possible name: LILAC GLACE'
(from lilac and marron glacè, I'm really amusing I know)
So that's how were born a couple of scarflettes/neckwarmers, and a pair of mittens:

CABLE SCARFLETTE
ARROW NECKWARMER
RHOMBUS FINGERLESS MITTENS

... but I still have some more yarn, so I'll think of something more, a beret maybe.

I thought of this knid of accessories because, at least to me, in winter hands and neck are to be warmed most, though not with coarse yarns... this is really velvety, ideal then.
Then I studied patterns that weren't common plain ones, and figured out cables, in all sorts and combinations possible, and ribs, waves squares or arrows, all of a kind!

---------

Within the collection of tiny stuff I'm preparing in these days there's another one: it's the Top Down Bonnet di Helloyarn, I knitted with the same yarn used for the booties - whe I started I still didn't know that the baby will be a male, but in any case let's stop with the tendency that for little girls everything must be pink, or azure for the little boys!!
It's such a lovely thing, any side you watch it from...

I had never made any embroidery on knitwear, so I went a bit randomly, but in the end I managed to make two eyes quite the same... I definitely look forward to see it over a little head!
Apart from sugary thoughts I really can't avoid, must be the hormones dancing I guess - the pattern is very quick and simple, it can be knitted also without ears and face, for more serious babies. This is not my case, though: I found another elf hat so amazing, to be knitted soon!

----------

Like a good hard-workin bee I go on with the collection of ideas that led me to create each garment I put on sale in my Etsy Shop. To say it right, I feel more like a remorese ful cicada, as I should have done this reporting in parallel withthe creation work, but instead I got immersed in the most amusing part, and here I am...

In this chapter I'll tell of what I made from DUSK and GREEN TEA, that I spun last spring (and it seems ages ago!)

DUSK STORY
This is the first yarn I assembled starting from different batts, ie. I took the single colours - cyan, brick red and lilac - and opened the fibres as much as I could putting one over another, in order to let them mix up once made compact and spun. I'm so happy with the result: colours actually change one from another, and I didn't use any carder at all!
Then I knitted a scarf, ribbed 1/1, long and narrow, so that it could feel mild even folded many times around the neck.

Any particular sign?
I finished both ends with an arrow tip shape, to which I added a couple of handblown beads (the come from Muran in fact!) I had found in an antique market, sprinkling from a counter, wonderful!

GREEN TEA STORY
I'v told a little about this yarn I spun right after Cumin, with the same style; this, though being Corriedale fiber too, is softer and such a brilliant green that I called it Green Tea; in fact, it reminds me of the gentle hills covered of tea plantations, sprouts especially, I saw in Vietnam, amazing believe me!
Anyway, once spun this yarn I thought of a pattern that could let that soft feeling, and the skeins let me knit something quite long: so I began a lacy large scarf, all rows with knit stitch so that it's double-face, that I joined by the ends to form a large loop (I had cast on the stitches with a provisional, crochet cast on ;>). Here it is: like a ribbon can be wrapped as many times to be a neckwarmer, or hung up as a scarf...

Well, see you next episode!

LE STORIE DI STRAWBERRY FOREST, CUMINO E AUTUNNO (STRAWBERRY FOREST, CUMIN AND AUTUMN STORIES)

CREAZIONI - INTRO....

Ricordate quindi i miei primissimi filati postati?
Strawberry Forest...
Cumin...
Autumn...

Cominciamo dall'inizio:

-----

(CREATIONS - INTRODUCTION...)
The first creations I made were born together with the very first yarns I spun, of which I told after my gorgeous trip to Switzerland; since then many ideas came to my mind, while I learnt to spin.
So, letting myself be driven by colours and sensations that this new practice brought to me, I started thinking of patterns that could best adapt to it.

Do you remember the earliest yarn I posted here?
Strawberry Forest...
Cumin...
Autumn...

I'll tell the story from the beginning:

STRAWBERRY FOREST STORY
My original idea was of a neckwarmer, knitted in round all in reverse stocking stitch with only two diagonal cables 1/1 spirlaing up along the length; the yarn itself was quite thick, so I didn't work too much on the pattern. Then, once tried on, I thought of tightening it by the chin, and I inserted a button, to be fixed between the stitches, without any buttonhole. Wearing it it got stuck like ahat and I thought "why not?2
The game was started, as may uses I could think of were tried!

CUMIN STORY
I spun this yarn thinner than before, and so the skeins came out longer, of course!
Hence I thought of knitting something bigger than a scarf, a stole perhaps... but when I was in the middle of it, I decided to build a light poncho, made of two parts sewn together. Actually I've already written about the pattern, so search people search...

AUTUMN STORY
This is the classic soft and warm yarn in which you'd like to get wrapped... so I thought of knitting a shawl to fold shoulders, neck etc. I worked it in stocking stitch, as it was already quite bulky; only added a crocheted edge to give a better finishing, and in this way when the end twist on themselves it's even nicer!
I still have enough yarn to knit something else... let's see what autumn evokes to my mind this time.

ANNUNCIO SPECIALE: SONO SU ETSY!!! (SPECIAL ANNOUNCE: I'M ON ETSY!!!)

FINALMENTE!

FINALLY!
After a long job of preparing patterns, knitting garments, choosing pictures, various presentations etc. HERE I AM, LET THE DREAM BEGIN.
I opened an online shop on Etsy, the main website devoted to buying and selling handmade thing. It was born in the US, where there's a huge community of users, but it's open woldwide. There you can find almost anything you could imagine, it's really worth peering at.

So, you can visit my little shop from the banner on the left, or going to: www.uvball.etsy.com.

There you may find all items are 100% handmade: I personally choose materials and techniques to create the best garments I can.
I prefer to use natural, eco-friendly fibres, or even recycled and recovered ones, because I think they shall bring a memory of their previous shapes, lives and uses and therefore could be more comfortable to wear.
I take particular care in choosing colours: carding, spinning and knitting then are conduced to let fibres shades express what I meant, and wish you to feel wearing a garment.

You may order custom patterns, starting from the ones shown, or we shall invent some other together: don't hesitate emailing me or leaving a comment here. In fact, I'm selecting some producer which I order fleeces from, so we'll have the possibility to choose even colour and fibre... well in that case delivery time will therefore get longer... I'll try.

What to say more? Wouldn't know, soon you'll see stories and prior events behing every pattern I realized.

More photos of all garments are obviously on my Flickr page ( ehm, soon, as it's a really big job to update all knitting online resources...)

PINWHEEL SWEATER

------------

I finished the Pinwheel!
In time for cold days still to come, but you know sooner or later one morning you wake up in an autumn breeze.
I'm satisfied, it's a very warm jacket; I decided to close it in the front with two buttons that end directly in the loopy edge, skipping buttonholes that I don't particularly appreciate! Now there's a big belly in the middle, but I'm comforted because the pattern looks very versatile: maternity or not, I really suggest it in this sense.
In fat, anyway you wear it, the jacket still is quite open in the front, so if you don't want to "fix" it with sewed buttons, it's alway possible to secure it with a brooch or something like that and that's done.

The part I prefere most is the neck, as it lies on the shoulders but still keeps in shape.
Besides, Ihave nearly half of the tweedy yarn left, so I could knit something to put underneath; I guess I'll wait for the belly to disappear for this... you know knitwear is flexible, but now I really can't think of knitting something to wear for a few months and unravel a short time after (also because I have in mind another one to knit with some handspunt yarn I'm preparing, that I'll study how to adapt!).

E' USCITO UN NUOVO LIBRO...! ( A NEW BOOK'S ON THE SHELVES...!)

Finally, after an everlasting waiting, I found in a library the book of which I treated the italian translation, as I wrote here last spring.
The editor, Vallardi, chose correctly to wait the autumn for the publishing, as this should be a period in which knitting might be more appealing.
I'm very proud of this little job, that happened even a little by chance to me, and that, I knew recently, is part of a co-edition that implied a worldwide simultaneous publishing; above all, I'm happy because I was asked to translate another book within the same series, this time about crochet!

For curioses, I can anticipate briefly the idea: after a short introduction on the history of knitting and the most common equipments available, there's a large amount of instructions about the most important tecniques, catig on and off, knitting, shaping, sewing and embroidering... you won't find any pattern then, but only many hints and details.

--------------

A new section for tiny works that are populating my house and within a few months will finally find a better place...

I'll start with finished pieces and leave a little surprise about the ones still in progress... especially because the batteries for my camera are on charge so I can't take any picture (or better, every time I remember to take some photos, there's something else in need of batteries, so no point).

Well, as announced, my first little piece are Saartje Booties , that I knitted with a rad wool I have plenty of in my trunk; I love its warmness and softness... so here they are.

The other work is a baby blanket, I keep to the standard style I know, that's going to join the other at least three ones that came out from my mum and mother in law wardrobes... I had already begun it when I discovered them!
I knitted it in squares, interspersing four colours in garter and moss stitch; at the yarn shop I was suggested to knit single stripes of squares to sew together, but as I don't reallly fancy sewing my knitting that much, I thought of another solution.
I knitted the first stripe of four blocks, one for each colour, cast off and cut the yarns; then I picked up the stitches along the seam and started the second stripe, with a different direction, changing colour after each square.
The greatest difficulty at the beginning was to mantain the blocks united in every row: at the end of each one, in fact, I had to cross the yarns in one direction on the right side and in the opposite on the wrong side.
I continued in this way specularly from the first stripe, until I had yarn enough; at the end I knitted a sort of edge high half of the main blocks, that I sewed by the angles.
Still the blanket did't seem well finished, so, armed of patience and self-destruction, I passed the edge of every square whipping!
Eventually I'm satisfied

(and I don't think I'll knit something similar soon)

DAL BAULE DEI LAVORI A MAGLIA (FROM MY KNITWEAR TRUNK)

-------------
Today I feel like tidying uo a bit; I arranged all my favourites on internet in my pc, then I checked up the folder containing my blog photos and found many I had taken this spring at the seaside; they show almost all my works (I already spoke of some), so, order here too: it's time to post them here in hte blog properly, so in this category will end up all my works, somehow old, memorable, epic etc...

To start with a set piece, even cumbersome in my wardrobe, here is my awesome GREEN COAT, I knitted during university good times whenn I had plenty of spare time; I found a pattern on Burda, from which I took proportions, and then changed ( the neck had a shawl shape ).
I chose to mix a thread of sport wool and 2 threads of kid mohair, knitted with &mm needles: the result is the warmest garment I've ever worn, though, being it knitwear after all, in windy days we have here it's not enough to heat me up.

Ayway, it's going to stay in my "trunk" for long, I adore it!

AGOSTO 2008 (2008, AUGUST)

Pronti via.

-----------

Can't believe it's a month I havn't been writing a single post!
So many things happened, between holidays and a baby coming, that I've been a bit absentminded... and like after every long absence now I've to overcome a sort of block to restart posting here; the same thing is happening with my spinning wheel that looks at me with the same thread hanging, and asks " when are we going to finish this great violet yarn?"
Eh, now I'm starting againg...

Actually I'vE done a lot of knitting; I'm proceeding with the Pinwheel, that's becoming a huge woolen circle, I've almost finished a baby squared blanket (I ran to buy some yarn as soon as I had finished the ultrasound...), and a pair of lovely red Saartje's booties.

Above all, I thought about loads of plans for the next seasons coming, as usual for years the end of august, though basicly it's still summertime, brings lost of knitting ideas to me, this time also many purposes. Mulled much over that, and decided to create my own small collections kntted with my handspun yarns; I'm still studying next steps, but if I don't jump into this now I'll probably won't do later!

A month of silence can hide many things... possibly nothing, or just some rest, or new life in any sense. To me this is a sort of constant, guess I thought and made the best choices in an undertone, surprising who stays out.
§Guess next months will be, if possible, even more irrational and messy than the passed ones, perhaps also the blog is about to change, who knows.

Ready, go.

QUANDO CI SI AGGROVIGLIA... (WHEN THINGS GET TANGLED)

------------

Don't know where to start from, it seams so weird that I stopped writing for such a long time! It didn't happen on purpose, neither I had any obstacle blocking me... but every day I used to say, I'll post tomorrow, and here we are.
The only reason I can find is that everyday life has just been tangled a bit more than usual, I was distracted and spent some time unravelling the knots.

Actually I didn't stop knitting or spinning, maybe less than before, because of the hot weather, but there are some news I can tell now.

First of all, I'm very happy to show the last yarn I bought, arrived directly from the Shetlands, UK from Harris Tweed and Knitwear (after quite many delays due to italian post offices, I had ordered this on june the 4 for my birthday and arrived on july the 16, thanks to a second delivery from the sender, as the first one got lost...). They sell yarns they dye and spin, apart from fabrics and accessories; the skeins are nearly 220g, and the minimum quantity is roughly 900g.
I got the first impression from the parfum: it's meadows, peats, sea, fog and sheep of course... Scotland in a word! in spite of Proust and his recherche, it was driven there at first sniff, it was the same as when I went there as a girl.
Second impression: from the colour, like every tweed worth this name it's made of so many shades changing with the light you look at it with.
Third impression: the ruggedness, which is a correct average because it doesn't itch, but surely is not velvety.

Anyway, here are a couple of pictures, even of the pattern I've just started: the Pinwheel Sweater, a free pattern I found on Ravelry, knitted from the centre of the back on round; I guess I'll have some spare yarn to knit even something to put under the jacket.

LIBRI & FILATI (BOOKS & YARNS)

---------------

Didn't resist to curiosity, and yesterday I bought the new book by Kate Jacobs "Friday night knitting club", that has just been issued in libraries in Italy. I only read the preface but it seems cute, even though I prefere the original cover to the one chosen for the italian edition, with thigh in the wind and high heels... maybe I'm too critical today. Anyway I'm going to start it as soon as I finish the book on my nightstand, and perhaps we'll talk about it then...

Apart from that, I wanted to show how the wrap I'm knitting with my Cumin is proceeding: I love the effect given by teh pattern (that is nearly the same used in Spirogyra mittens, but I knitted in multiples of 8 stitches instead of 6); I'm only a bit perplexed on how the wool renders, because it's actually soft and elastic, but once knitted it seems coarse, rough... but I think I can't explain it well...

I finished spinning 2 more creatures!

GREEN TEA: spun like Cumin, a single ply, quite thin; it's a very brilliant green

AUTUMN: spun froma a melange roving, it gives many shades on red, that remind my of autumn warm colours; I spun it thick and thin and plied with a thread... to be the second time I do this it hasn't been so easy to mantain the correct tension on the thread and on the wool as well.
I guess I'll soon try to play with the tension and see what happens in the yarn...

SPIROGYRA e CUMINO

Invece eccoli qua:

Mi è davvero piaciuto vedere come i colori sfumano da uno all'altro.

A parte tutto sta venendo bene secondo me.

---------
After almost two months I finally finished my Spirogyra, designed by Lynn Vogel... don't know why they frogged for so long: the pattern was enjoyable and they worked out quite fine, modestly.... I started to knit them in Switzerland, and then set them apart before my spinning wheel and spinning itself, poor them!
Here they are instead.

By the way, I knitted them with a yarn I bought on Etsy from Pancakeandlulu; it's hand dyed, I wanted to see one, to understand how the colour is "built", how it renders once knitted, etc: my comment is amazing! I really loved to see the shades fading one into another...
Parenthesis on the stitches: adoring, they give a lacy effect without being too difficult, and add movement to the work, especially here that it's knitted in round.

In fact, I'm using the same pattern for a wrap I've just started knitting with my last spun creature: CUMIN, that up to now is going fine, for being a single ply
which is still a bit risky for me (that don'y have much experience in spinning), because in parts with little torsion the wool thread (I didn't add any acrilyc) tends to break. Actually it happened only casting on the stitches on the needle, where I had to pull the thread a bit more, not in the proper work... many justifications...!
Anyway, it's getting lovely.
Ah I was forgetting to show the yarn, sorry!
INFO DI SERVIZIO:

PER IL MOMENTO NON STO METTENDO IN VENDITA SU ETSY I FILATI TINTI CON PIGMENTI NATURALI, LI RISERVO PER I PROBABILI MERCATINI D'AUTUNNO, MA SE A QUALCUNO INTERESSANO SCRIVETEMI!!
