KIMONO

KIMONO

I've just finishe a kimono jacket, it's gorgeous and really comfortable. I knitted it with a circular 5mm needle, the yarn was a gift, I'm sure it's a good mohair... so soft, thin but warm as well. I took the pattern from a Burda Maglia of a few years ago.
I had never worked with circular needles an entire garment, and in fact it's been quite difficult to find a 120cm cable, but it was necessary to bear the length of both the sleeves and the rear; in the end I found it at Kristine - Il Cesto della lana: she's cheap, punctual in delivery and really kind, besides she's in stock many nordic yarns that are worth thinking.
So to come back to my work, according to me this tecnique is definitely faster and has the advantage of avoiding many seams, that I personally never stood a lot: they usually give me a few problems when garments are worn.
Anyway I really love the final result, it's very comfortable and versatile, you can close it with a big belt or a pin, as I chose... after along trip around felt stands in a Christmas fair!

Congratulations on your blog of creative knitting and thinking. I am a New Yorker and a mother of an Itlian son, I live during the summer near Pontremoli. It is apparent that you know also English so I will write to you in English but can also write in Italian if you prefer. My question about the kimono sleeves is how do you make them come out right on circs. I am following Cat Bordhis method of two circs.

Grazie,

Christine

Hi Christine,
I know Pontremoli, it's such a quiet charmind place...
About the Kimono, I don't know Cat Bordhi's method (and if you want you might tell me something about it, is it on her first book? it's the only one I have). I knitted starting from the left part, by the armholes I cast on 75 stitches and worked them in short rows: twice 6, twice 4 twice 8, twice 10 and once 25.
Knitted along for 14cm.
Did the same specularly for the right part, then passed all the stitches on a longer circular needle proceede for 14cm more, and cast off on both sides the same amount of stitches I had cast on... hope it's clear, otherwise let me know, it's a pleasure!!

Dear Stefania

I was using a method of 2 circs based on Cat Bordhis video on Youtube. I you dont have access let me know and I will describe it verbally in my next message.

What I dont understand, probably due to my lack of knitting experience, is whether you are working the back and front part of the sleeves separatly or together. I try to visualise working them at the same time but it always seems to me that I would come out without a hole for the sleeves unless I knitted them sideways. As you can see I am very confused. Thank you for your patience.

Best

Christine

Sorry I didn't reply quickly but I was busy at work. I had the same problem to visualize the work, I worked the left and right front of the sleeves separately (as the continuation of the left and right part of the kimono on one side). Then I put all the stitches together (the left and right part of the kimono and the sleeves nearly 14cm high)on a 120cm circ needle. Proceeding therefore the back of the sleeves and of the kimono is knitted altogether...
better?
bye
